- Grade the soil surface so it gently slopes away from all buildings and fill all low areas so water will not stand on the soil surface after a rain.
- Spread 4 inches of topsoil or till the existing topsoil to a depth of 4 to 6 inches until all large clumps are broken up and all weeds and grass are killed. Rake to remove all rock and debris and to level seedbed.
- Evenly spread 15 pounds of a complete fertilizer such as 16-16-16 or 20-10-10 per 1000 square feet. Have the soil tested, sampling the top 6 inches. Add lime as recommended. After lime and fertilizer have been evenly spread, rake the soil surface smooth.
- With a spreader, evenly broadcast the grass seed over the newly prepared seedbed. With a leaf rake, lightly drag rake across the surface being careful not to bury the seed more than 1/4 inch deep. It is not necessary to cover all the seed. Seed new lawns between May 15 and August 1.
- Roll the newly seeded area with a weighted roller to insure good seed soil contact for faster, more complete germination.
- Water with a fine mist, keeping the seed bed uniformly moist at all times until seedlings are 1 1/2 to 2 inches high. The grass seed will have sprouted in approximately 30 days.
AFTERCARE - Mow the first time when the grass is 3 inches high. After the first mowing, fertilize with 10 pounds of 16-16-16 per 1000 square feet. Apply fertilizer only when grass blades are dry and water thoroughly immediately after application to avoid fertilizer burn.
