New Lawn Instructions
LAWN INSTALLATION -
Labrenz Landscaping, Inc. will do its very best to give you a lawn that, with some time and some care on your part, will be full, uniform and satisfying -- a lawn you can enjoy for some years to come.
Our seeding process involves finish grading your property both with machines and by hands to produce a smooth uniform grade for drainage and ease in mowing. Once this seed bed is prepared, we incorporate fifty (50) pounds of lime and eight (8) pounds of 10-20-20 fertilizer per 1,000 square feet to provide the proper fertility and pH for the young grass plant. These two elements are worked into the soil by raking. Seed is then applied at the rate fo five (5) pounds per 1,000 square feet. The seed is raked into the soil. Rolling will be performed three to four times as needed to firm the soil.
SEED MIXTURE -
We developed our seed mixture ourselves. It is mixed specially for Fairbanks to our specifications. Our seed is a mixture made up of the following types of seed: Annual ryegrass, Kentucky Bluegrass, and Red Fescue. This is an excellent all round mix adapting well to most situations.
LAWN WARRANTY -
It is a well known fact that producing a lawn is often more difficult than any other phase of gardening. We endeavor to use the best seed and materials available for each specific situation. We cannot, however, control snow mold, fungi, animal damage, washouts, glaciation, salt and de-icer damage, frost kill, the weather, soil conditions or subsequent care which determines the success or failure of lawns after they are planted. We, therefore, DO NOT WARRANTY LAWNS. We assume no responsibility for sinchage in lawn or planting areas. We are not responsible for breakage of underground services (electrical, water or phone). Any bare spots that persist after 30 days from the date of planting will be reseeded the first season, at no extra charge. We want your plantings to succeed and will be glad to advise you with respect to proper care at any time. If we have reason to believe that the postseeding instructions were not carried out for whatever reason, this warranty is null and void.
POSTSEEDING CARE -
Watering: NEVER let soil become dry after the seeding is completed. Once seeds have started to grow, (as sort a time as two days for ryegrass), desiccation will kill them. Soils dry out amazingly fast, especially on sunny, windy days. Watering once a day is often not adequate. Sprinkling morning, noon and night is better. Just leave the sprinkler in place. A good oscillating sprinkler needs only to be moved twice to water 2,000 square feet. Do not water heavily enough to erode soil or seeds. Just keep the top inch of soil moist at all times.
Mowing: Contrary to popular opinion, it does not harm seedling grass to mow them as soon as there's any growth to cut. Consider early mowing a pruning process whereby lateral growth is increased to create a tight sod. Set your mower for a 2 inch cut, and use it each time the grass gets 3 inches tall. Be sure not to cut closer than 1 1/2 to 2 inches for most bluegrass, fescues and improved ryegrass.
Weeds: Annual weeds are hurt by cutting, so mowing off their tops as soon as possible will prevent them from setting seed. Don't be concerned about the abundance of weeds in a newly seeded lawn. All topsoil has weed seeds, and it's good to germinate them so they'll be out of the way. Most of the weeds you'll see are annuals that die with the first frost. Fall seedings are ideal, because frost comes in such a short time. Some weeds started in spring may survive most of the summer before dying.
Avoid herbacides on newly seeded lawns. Young seedlings may be injured by chemicals that would be deemed safe later on.
Fertilizing: Do it regularly, starting at about 3 to 4 week safter seeding. Use a 10-20-20 at the rate of 8 pounds per 1,000 square feet.
